NATO says : Taliban Attacks Up 11% Year 2012
The U.S.-led coalition says insurgent attacks in Afghanistan during the past three months were up 11 percent, compared to the same period last year.
The latest statistics also say that the number of attacks in June was
the highest for any month since fighting surged in the summer of 2010.
NATO released the figures on Thursday. They indicate a disturbing uptick
in attacks at a time when foreign troops are leaving and insurgents are trying
to prove they remain a potent force.
The coalition offered two possible reasons for the uptick. It says a
shortened poppy harvesting season prompted insurgents to start their spring
offensive earlier this year. Also, with more Afghan security forces on the
ground and taking the lead in more operations, more of them are getting killed.

Cannibal Arrested in American Florida
Puppeteer Suspected in child Smut case fantasized about cannibalism,
Ronald
William Brown, 57, had access to hundreds of children through his business, a
traveling puppet show called "Puppets Plus." He reportedly worked at
schools, birthday parties, malls and even church groups.
The
case came to light during a child pornography investigation that started in
Kansas. Authorities say they found an online chat between Brown and a man
there.
According
to investigators, Brown fantasized about strangling, dismembering and then
cannibalizing his young victims, describing it all in graphic detail.
Brown
has performed at Tampa Bay Rays games and at the Florida Botanical Gardens,
according to pictures on his Facebook page.
Brown
sat before a judge for a preliminary examination on Tuesday.
Thursday
night, nearly a dozen officers searched his mobile home and agents emptied
Brown’s tool shed.

"I
can confirm we have found more evidence," Homeland Security agent
Guillermo Cancio told the Times.

248 human Fetuses found in Russian Jungle
In Russia's south Urals region have stumbled upon a gruesome discovery — four
barrels left in a forest containing 248 human fetuses, prompting an official
probe, officials said Tuesday.
Police in the Sverdlovsk region said the fetuses,
preserved in formaldehyde, were kept in barrels with tags marked with surnames
and numbers.
The fetuses were found a few miles away from a
highway linking the region's capital, Yekaterinburg, with another big city,
Nizhny Tagil. Police believe that they may have come from four local hospitals
and have started an investigation.
The fetuses have been placed in a local morgue.
The Health Ministry said it had ordered a check of
local hospitals to prevent such incidents occurring again.
"The rude violation of medical ethics causes
indignation," the ministry said in a statement. "It's inadmissible
from both the moral and legal viewpoint."
The Russian Orthodox Church used the incident to
emphasize its opposition against abortions. Spokesman Vladimir Legoida said in
a statement that it "highlighted the degradation of our society."

Mariah Carey the Judge in American Idol
Fox is once again betting on an
aging superstar diva to revitalize “American Idol.”
One
of the most commercially successful pop performers of the 1990s, vocalist
Mariah Carey was the third child of black/Hispanic aeronautical engineer Alfred
Carey and Irish opera singer/voice coach Patricia Hickey -- a mix that made her
the target of persistent racial prejudice throughout her childhood. The
hostility against mixed marriages still persisting in New York at the time
ultimately brought about her parents' divorce in the early 70s, putting Hickey
in the position of having to keep multiple jobs in order to support her
children on her own. By the age of 3, Mariah had already begun to show an
enthusiasm for singing, and would sometimes accompany her mother while she
rehearsed; taking note of her daughter's interest, Hickey initiated her vocal
training soon afterwards. Singing quickly became the center of the young
Mariah's existence. Her first public performance took place at the age of 6,
and her schoolwork went largely ignored in favor of anything that could further
her dream of becoming a star.
Mariah Carey, who in her heyday was
one of the most popular singers on the planet, has been tapped to replace
Jennifer Lopez as a judge on the musical talent show.
In a moment
of faux drama, Fox Entertainment President Kevin Reilly called the pop star
Monday on his phone during the Television Critics Assn. press tour in Beverly
Hills to share the news with television journalists.
“I think
it’s the biggest recording artist that any of these shows have ever had,” said
Reilly.
Carey, who
is wrapping up production on her latest album, said she can’t wait to join the
show.
“It’s going
to be fun,” she said, adding that it will be rewarding to “help find new talent
and give back with ‘American Idol.’”
NRO implementation: SC rejected Goverment's Answer
The
Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected Prime Minister Raja
Pervaiz Ashraf’s reply submitted to
the court while hearing the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO)
implementation case.
The reply
filed earlier said that a plea for review of the court’s order should have been
filed instead.
The court
said that the objections raised mentioned those orders that the court issued to
the prime minister on June 26 and July 12, but neither were the copies of these
orders attached with the plea submitted nor are these orders revokable.
Ethnic violence:
ASSAM: New
clashes took the death toll from ethnic
violence in India’s remote northeast to 22 on Tuesday despite an
official curfew backed by shoot-on-sight orders, police said.
Fighting flared overnight between
Bodo tribal groups and Muslim settlers in the west of Assam state, where more
than 40,000 villagers have fled their homes to shelter in government
buildings, schools and relief camps.
Indian soldiers
and paramilitary troops have been on patrol to try to quell the
unrest that started on Friday, triggered by long-standing territorial disputes.
“Incidents of arson and violence
were reported overnight from several places with the death toll now put at
22,” Hagrama Mohilary, head of the Bodoland Territorial Council,
a local government body, told AFP by telephone.
“The situation is tense and volatile and we want more security forces,
especially reinforcements of army soldiers.”
Local television channels broadcast pictures of several homes that had
been set ablaze by rioters.
“Police, army and paramilitary
troopers have intensified patrols and a 24-hour, indefinite curfew has been
imposed,” Assam Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain said from the
worst-hit district of Kokrajhar.
Police issued shoot-on-sight orders late on Monday after rioters burnt
shops and houses and attacked rival gangs. The orders mean that mobs breaking
the curfew could be shot without warning.
Authorities said an estimated 40,000 people — many of them women and children — had fled their homes to take shelter in relief centres set up at designated government facilities.

War Between Apple and Samsung
Apple Inc and Samsung Electronics
Co. began the latest round of their long-running global patent war on Monday as
an Australian judge started hearing evidence for an anticipated 3-month
long trial.
Apple and Samsung have been locked in an acrimonious
battle across 10 countries involving smartphones and tablets since April 2011,
with the Cupertino, California-based company filing a suit in Australia saying
the touch-screen technology used in Samsung’s new Galaxy 10.1 tablet violates
Apple patents.
The Fight has triggered expectations that some of the
pair’s $5 billion-plus relationship may be up for grabs. Samsung counts Apple
as its biggest customer and makes parts central to Apple’s mobile devices.
While any decision in the Australian case is unlikely to
have a substantial impact in other jurisdictions like Europe or the United
States where the technology giants are also suing each other, the trial
proceedings could reshape the legal strategies employed by Apple and Samsung in
other countries, lawyers say.
Mark Summerfield, a patent lawyer and senior associate
with Melbourne-based law firm Watermark, said “there’s no doubt there’s a
strategic and psychological effect” attached to the Australian case. “Courts in
other countries will watch what is happening here,” he said.
Apple and Samsung representatives declined to comment on
Monday at the hearing.
The Australian case arose in April 2011 when Apple said
Samsung copied the design of some of its tablet and smart phone devices.
Samsung has since launched a counterclaim in Australia alleging that Apple
infringed a number of South Korean technology firm’s data-transmission patents.
The lawsuits from both companies are being heard as one
case in the Australian federal court.
Samsung won
an early round of the Australian litigation when it succeeded in overturning an
injunction on the sale of its Galaxy 10.1 tablet in Australia just before
Christmas last year.
But Apple
won a heavyweight U.S. round when a judge banned the sale of both Samsung’s
Galaxy 10.1 tablet and the Galaxy Nexus phone ahead of a formal trial there.
Patent cases are also pending in Britain and Germany.
Spain Mourns
The death toll from a wildfire that is burning out of control in northeastern Spain rose to four on Monday, the Catalan regional government said.
The latest death is that of a 64-year-old French national who suffered 80 percent burns on Sunday, the health department said.
The other three casualties are also French nationals.
A 60-year-old Frenchman and his 15-year-old daughter drowned Sunday after they threw themselves into the sea to escape the approaching flames near the town of Portbou just across the border with France.
A 75-year-old Frenchman man died of a heart attack as he watched his house consumed by flames in the town of Llers.
The wildfire broke out on Sunday near the town of La Junquera and it spread very quickly in the region of Alt Emporda near the French border, whipped up by winds of up to 90 kilometres (55 miles) an hour.
It has so far ravaged up to 13,000 hectares (32,000 acres) of land.
The wind had died down a bit on Monday, allowing officials to deploy water-bombing aircraft against the flames for the first time.

Olympic under Threat
British newspaper ‘The Sun’ claims to have uncovered a visa scam being run by Pakistani officials a Lahore based politician and the Dream Land Travel Agency. The paper claims that the scam gives potential terrorists the chance to sneak into Britain with Pakistan’s Olympic team.
An undercover investigator from the British daily infiltrated the ring offering the false passports and visas. According to the paper, their investigator was provided a Pakistani passport with a fake name.
The investigator was also informed by a Lahore based politician Abid Choudhry that 7,000 pounds could get him a two month visa and smuggle him into London 2012 as part of Pakistan’s Olympic Squad.
Choudhry further said that just over 1,000 pounds were required for an official letter from the Pakistan Sports Board saying he (investigator) was part of the country’s Olympic squad.
‘The Sun’ has alerted the MI6, the Home Office, the UK Border Agency and the British High Commission in Islamabad and an investigation is underway.
The NADRA chairman said all angles of the fake passport scam will be investigated. He added that an investigation team would be formed and strict action will be taken against those involved.
Meanwhile, Pakistani sports officials Monday rubbished claims by the British newspaper.
Pakistan's Olympic chef de mission Aqil Shah dismissed the Sun's claims.
"These are baseless reports," Shah told AFP. "This is an attempt to malign Pakistan. Even if someone gets a passport he cannot enter the Olympic Village without an Olympic accreditation card."
Pakistan's 39-strong delegation -- minus Shah -- is already in London and consists of 23 athletes and 16 officials. Shah justified the number of officials.
"Hockey has at least six officials which are under the rules and then we have physicians and other coaches who are genuine members of Pakistan's contingent," said Shah.
Pakistan Olympic Association chief Arif Hasan was already in London and discussing the matter with the Pakistan High Commission, said Shah.
